After hours of driving we finaly arrived in Hungary, unfortunately, we once again arrived at night, so once again I didn't get to see anything until morning.
We made a 10 minute rest stop just past the Serbian border crossing, before continuing our journey north.

Parenting Guru: The slacker mom's guide to kindergarten prep

Photo by Amy, Using Our Words

Photo by Amy, Using Our Words

Yesterday was my son's first day of kindergarten. And, yes, I've known this day was coming for close to five and a half years. But it snuck up on me anyway. I wasn't ready for it. But it turns out my son, Big, was. Which was really surprising given how sensitive and emotional he tends to be. As I look back on all the things I should have done, I realize that not doing some of the prep is actually what led to our family's success. So should you have a newborn baby/stacks of paper you can't see over/denial issues, here's how I suggest you get your kid ready for kindergarten.

Forget about the summer worksheets your preschool teacher sends home. I came across ours last week, swore at myself, and asked Big if he wanted to do them. He picked a couple he liked and seemed excited about getting to work. I figure if I’d remembered I had the monster stack, I might have pushed him to do them all…and made him a bit more nervous about the academics to come.

It turns out we practiced recess. Following instructions isn't scary for my big (sniff, sniff) boy. It was unstructured part of the day I knew would be the hardest. We spent summer playing with neighbors and exploring the kindergarten play yard. He knew the lay of the land, had time to master the monkey bars and could find all his buddies doing their favorite things.

I let him break the rules. I'm lucky to have a good listener, so when I see him pushing limits, I know it means he’s comfortable. This summer I was often too tired to fight him (did I mention the newborn baby?) and would watch as he tested me—or authority in general. Of course I’d talk to him about his actions in a calm setting afterwards, and I’m hoping—really hoping—those talks will help him make smarter choices when he’s off being all grown up and stuff.

I kept him up (a tiny bit) late partying the night before school started. I'm not one to turn down fun with friends, so we joined our neighbors in a last-night-of-summer BBQ and let the kids run wild. Instead of sitting at home organizing and fretting about tomorrow, we were laughing and living in the moment. And by the time Big went to bed, he was exhausted and asleep in no time.

I woke him up early to watch cartoons before school. Routine is a must for this kid, so I tried to make this morning just like any other. Instead of letting him sleep in (until, you know, 6:15am) and rushing him out the door, I woke him up and turned on the TV for his usual morning show and cuddle with his baby sister. By the time we got to the bus stop, he was wide awake and ready to take on the world. Well, the kindergarten playground, at least.

And what did he think of his first day of school? “Best. Day. Ever.” Me? Well, it wasn’t so bad after all. And I have my summer slacking to thank for that.

How was your little one’s first day?

Amy is a Shine Parenting Guru. She also writes about her adventures parenting two boys and a baby girl on her slice-of-life blog, Using Our Words.

Many macho matters

Who says that all it takes to make a man happy is a beer, a couch and the remote control? Um, lots of people. Even so, these mags would beg to differ.

America’s in a protracted tennis drought, and fans should not expect to find a Roger Federer-like savior anytime soon, according to GQ magazine. With the US Open a week away, a small feature poses the query “Why does America suck at Tennis?” Outspoken racket legend John McEnroe says there’s “no one coming out in the next year or two where we’ll say, ‘Oh, my God, here he is.’” Elsewhere, there’s a piece on Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick, who the magazine declares “is back” and has his swagger again after 544 days in prison on charges that he led a dog-fighting ring. Similarly in the spirit of the gridiron, Jets star quarterback Mark Sanchez offers his best portrayal of Jets 1960s legend Broadway Joe Namath, down to a flashy fur coat. Namath famously predicted a championship in upsetting the then-Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III in 1969. Jets fans are hoping Sanchez can deliver the same results.

For those who haven’t read enough “how I hit rock-bottom and almost died” confessionals from the former members of Guns n’ Roses, Maxim comes to the rescue. “Please, kill me,” bassist Duff McKagan says he told a doctor after learning that his pancreas had literally exploded following years of overzealous alcohol consumption. “Just kill me. Kill me. Please.” In other cautionary matters, the magazine advises its semi-comatose readers to avoid “zoning out” when trying to score with a lady at a bar. “Pay attention to what she’s saying. It’s necessary if you want to get her into bed.”

Ryan Gosling is joined on the cover of Esquire by what at first appears to be a twin gay lover, who is smiling and leaning his head affectionately on the actor’s shoulder. Inside, however, we learn this is actually part of an artsy idea for a photo spread that Gosling had, in which his photoshopped doppelganger observes him cavorting with a beautiful nude woman who is painted up like a voodoo priestess. We’re not sure this qualifies as art, but we must admit we’re hard pressed to imagine how one could have a more enjoyable time while making oneself look totally ridiculous.

Ashton Kutcher guest edits the latest edition of Details. We’re not sure how much work that might have taken. Details is very light on copy with just a few Q&As, including one with Kutcher himself. Still, lots of clothing ideas for the young stylish man, and good page design. Beware, though: the men profiled in Details are as fashion-conscious as women who read Vogue. One who is an aspiring film maker seems very aware about having his hip sneakers untied and wearing the right socks. Cut!

President Obama is on a collision course not only with the Republican Presidential nominee but also with Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over nationalized health care, according to the New Yorker. The 11-page cover story focusing on how his wife, who works for the Heritage Foundation, has spoken out against the plan, and how her husband’s power is growing, is compelling reading. A short piece on new Republican Presidential nominee Rick Perry is also revealing.

New York’s Fall Preview issue is more than a thorough calendar of coming events. There are articles on relatively unexplored subjects: the on and off-again Meadowlands Mall project that would include an indoor ski slope and Hawaii-like pool; and the increasing trend of women who give birth eating their own placentas in pill form to battle postpartum depression. It also includes some sharp short profiles: Brad Pitt playing the lead role in Moneyball, and Samuel L. Jackson appearing in a play as Martin Luther King Jr. We also liked a piece about how the Brooklyn Philharmonic has no home.

Time likes to go deep with articles instead of simply recapping the week’s events. Sometimes it works; this week not really. A cover story on how next generation war veterans are becoming community leaders feels a little too breezy. The other lead story on how one professor views autism seems like a decent attempt that raises more questions than it answers. The mag likewise makes a good effort in showing how all the leading Republican presidential candidates pushed and received pork from the government, and are therefore being hypocrites. However, this is not much of a surprise.

Clowns, Naked Ladies and Plenty of Beer

[SP_PARTY] Geoffrey A. Fowler

Lululemon party at Club Bud

VANCOUVER, British Columbia—There were parties galore at the Winter Games, from intimate corporate shindigs to flashy red-carpet affairs. By far the most exclusive one happened on the rink at Canada Hockey Place, where the Canadian women's hockey team celebrated on the ice—with beer and cigars—after their gold-medal win over the U.S. on Thursday.

Over the past two weeks, Wall Street Journal reporters scattered to sample the best—and most Canadian—of parties. One constant: beer. The luckiest parties lured "The Great One," Canadian hockey legend Wayne Gretzky.

WSJ's Jessica Marmor talks with Olympic silver medalists Katherine Reutter and Charlie White, and freestyle skier Scotty Bahrke, at the Club Bud Lululemon party in Vancouver.

Here's how we judged them, on a scale of one maple leaf (a dud) to four (a bash):

Club Bud Lululemon

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

This star-studded nightclub boasted a red carpet and bumping dance floor. Countless athletes stopped by, including ice-dancing gold-medal winners Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, plus the rock group Barenaked Ladies. Food: Budweiser and more Budweiser.

Sochi World

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Downstairs had exhibits on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Russia. Upstairs, clowns cavorted and guests taste-tested five varieties of vodka. VIPs included Prince Albert of Monaco and—best of all—Mr. Gretzky.

Irish House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf1_A]

Americans aren't the only ones who reduce Irish culture to beer and bagpipes. No celebrities showed up when we were there—not even an Irish athlete on this particular night, though, to be fair, Ireland has only six competitors here. Molson and Guinness on tap, but not a Canadian—or Irish—delicacy in sight.

Molson Canadian Hockey House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf2_A]

A Canadian frat party multiplied by 10. Plenty of celebrities showed up, including Mr. Gretzky and hockey stars Grant Fuhr and Lanny McDonald. Comedian Seth Meyers, rock god Bryan Adams and actor Donald Sutherland also were there. No surprises on the buffet: Canadian beer, cheese and wine.

Holland Heineken House

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Part Disneyland, part beer garden, part high-school gym. When speed skating was on, the place filled up with orange-clad mobs hoping for another Dutch medal. The Dutch royal family, Dutch athletes and Dutch artists ate potato-sauerkraut "hotchpotches," which turned out to be mashed potatoes with a hot dog. Tasty anyway.

Alberta Train

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf3_A]

Ritzy passenger cars with glass-roofed upper decks. Most cars were leased to corporations for private schmoozing on this three-hour Vancouver-to-Whistler trip. A bevy of Albertan officials rode the train, feasting on "mountain pass pancakes" made with Aprikat beer.

Omega Party

Overall rank:

[mapleleaf1_A]

A luxury party for a luxury brand that could have been held at an Applebee's. Pretty dull unless you like journalists.

Nichols propels Positive Direction to comeback win for West 4th title

Even with the game appearing to slip away, Malik Nichols only saw one possible ending and he wasn’t going to be satisfied with anything else.

“I had to,” he said. “The chip is on the line. We had to win.”

Win his team did.

The former Boys & Girls wing scored 37 points and led the final Positive Direction comeback to complete and electric performance and a 70-66 win over Bedford Y in the boys high school championship at the West 4th Classic on Saturday afternoon.

Nichols, the game's MVP, scored eight of his team’s final 10 points including a layup in traffic with 27 seconds left to put them up 68-66. He corralled a missed 3-pointer by Marlon Cort on the possession and was fouled. Chris Best did bail him out in the final seconds by rebounding his second free throw miss to secure the win.

Positive Direction celebrates its West 4th boys high school division title Sunday.

Joseph Staszewski

Positive Direction celebrates its West 4th boys high school division title Sunday.

“It was huge,” Nichols said of Best’s board. “That’s how you win games.”

What made it sweeter for Nichols was doing it against two of his former Kangaroos teammates in Mike Taylor and Antonie Slaughter along with other Brooklyn stars. He and Taylor jawed early with Nichols saying he couldn’t guard him. He didn’t score in the second quarter as he was being protected on the bench with two fouls. N

ichols grinned widely when beating Taylor, who had 12 points, was mentioned. Cardozo rising senior Ta’Jay Henry added 11 points and Keith Gardner had six for Positive Direction. St. John’s-bound forward Maurice Harkless and Kelvin Amayo each had 18 points for Bedford.

“He’s a fighter,” Henry said of Nichols. “He said he wanted the chip. He is playing against his own boys.”

Added Harkless: “I think that’s the best I’ve seen him play.”

There were times when it didn’t look like it was going to happen. The Queens-based Positive Direction trailed 38-37 with 5:57 left in the third, but Nichols responded with a layup, a 3-pointer and feed to Gardner for an easy score.

Then things went from bad to worse. Harkless led a 10-0 Bedford run capped by a two-handed putback slam to extend its lead to 60-48 with 5:30 left to play in the game. There wasn’t any panic from Positive Direction.

“One more push,” PD coach Tyron Wilkerson said. “That’s how it went. They went up seven or eight. We went up three or four, they went back up 12. That’s what we told them in the last timeout. This is it, buckle down.”

His team exploded for a 15-2 spurt led by Nichols, who will attend a prep school next season, and Henry, nicked “The Garbage Man” by tournament director Arizona because of his blue collar effort on the boards. His putback with 2:15 left in the game gave Positive Direction, which had a lackluster July, a 63-62 lead.

With the program’s girls team winning also winning the West 4th crown, it made Positive Direction the first dual winners.

“This is a big win,” Henry said. “It’s our first championship of the summer in a big game.”

Bali Bombing Suspect Extradited

JAKARTA, Indonesia—An Indonesian militant who allegedly made the explosives used in the 2002 Bali bombings returned to his homeland under tight security Thursday, more than six months after he was captured in northwest Pakistan.

Umar Patek had a $1 million bounty on his head when authorities caught up with him Jan. 25 in Abbottabad—the same town where Osama bin Laden was killed in a U.S. commando attack four months later.

View Full Image

bali0811

Associated Press

Indonesian militant Umar Patek, seen in this 2007 file photo, was extradited to Indonesia on Thursday from Pakistan.

bali0811

bali0811

Indonesia's anti-terrorism chief, Ansyaad Mbai, told The Associated Press that it was no coincidence that Mr. Patek turned up in Abbottabad.

"Patek was very valuable for the U.S.," he said Wednesday, hours before the 41-year-old boarded an Indonesian plane sent to a Pakistani air force base just outside Islamabad. "He helped lead authorities to bin Laden," Mr. Mbai said, without elaborating.

Mr. Patek touched down outside Indonesia's capital, Jakarta, on Thursday morning and was taken straight to a police detention center in the West Java town of Kelapa Dua, an anti-terror official said.

No trial date has been announced yet.

Indonesian officials say Mr. Patek has confessed to playing a key role in the 2002 Bali bombings, which killed 202 people, many of them foreign tourists, including 88 Australians.

He also admitted to making the bombs used in a string of Christmas Eve attacks on churches in 2000 that claimed 19 lives, they say.

But because tough anti-terror laws passed after the Bali blasts cannot be applied retroactively, he will likely be charged with illegal possession of explosives, Mr. Mbai said.

Even though that charge also carries a maximum penalty of death, there are concerns he might get off easy.

Mr. Mbai said Mr. Patek has valuable intelligence about al Qaeda and links with its Southeast Asian affiliate, Jemaah Islamiyah, blamed for the Bali bombings and all other major attacks in Indonesia.

A highly praised anti-terrorism campaign in the country of 240 million has seen hundreds of suspects arrested and convicted in recent years, but Mr. Patek is one of the biggest to have been captured alive.

American restaurant sign

In its time, Steve's Gay '90s was all the rage in Tacoma. It was opened in 1950 by Steve Pease and John Stanley, offering customers fine food, with lunch for a $1. There was evening entertainment, dancing, can-can girls, an organ, cable cars as booths, and an Opera House. Steve's closed in 1977, but its iconic sign has remained with various names over the years.

Trying to wipe out the wave

Fans start wave

A group of fans attending a game between the Boston Red Sox and Chicago White Sox at Fenway Park try to start a wave. Some baseball fans would like to see the wave crash for good. (Michael Ivins / Getty Images / September 5, 2010)

It usually begins the same way, with one or two fans who stand up and holler at everyone around them. They want to start the wave.

If Greg Holland is sitting nearby, he refuses to budge.

"Man," he says out loud, "sure would be nice if we were paying attention to the game."

The longtime Texas Rangers fan has a problem with jumping up and down for no reason.

"The wave," he insists, "has nothing to do with baseball."

At any other major league stadium, his voice might be lost in the din, but a curious rift has developed among the crowds at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas.

Fans of a certain mind-set — especially those who visit Holland's website, stopthewave.net — have complained often enough that the team now shows a partly humorous, partly serious message on the scoreboard. It warns that throwing your arms into the air can cause muscle strains and should be confined to "pro football games and Miley Cyrus concerts."

On the other side of this ideological divide, a not-so-silent majority has risen to the challenge. Literally.

"There is a segment of people who see our sign and do the wave," a Rangers executive said. "It's actually going stronger than ever."

Among all the grand traditions of American sport, this one might seem trivial if not downright annoying. But do not underestimate the power of the wave.

::

It isn't like the all those USC alumni flashing the victory sign when the band plays "Tribute to Troy." It isn't like the cowbells at Mississippi State or "the chop," in either its Atlanta Braves or Florida State incarnations.

Those traditions are connected to the action on the field. Those fans can make the argument they are rooting for their team.

The wave exists independent of home runs or touchdowns. It can be roaring along at the exact moment that misfortune befalls the home team — sometimes the crowd abruptly stops cheering, sometimes it doesn't even notice.

That puts the wave in a subcategory with beach balls in the stands at Dodger Stadium or droning vuvuzelas, the South African horns that made the 2010 World Cup sound as if it were played inside an enormous bee hive.

"How can it not be a distraction?" Holland asked.

His crusade dates back to a 2009 game when his team surrendered a late-inning lead while the crowd was focused on sitting and standing in unison.

"The Rangers ended up losing," he said.

Though not exactly the crusading type, the 29-year-old insurance company employee loves sports. Several years ago, with the Dallas Mavericks struggling on the basketball court, he created a website urging the team to fire then-coach Avery Johnson.

Tintagel Church

Tintagel Church standing out above Gull Rock in this early morning shot from just east of Port Isaac. I don't do much B&W but thought this looked much better than the colour version.
