CHSAA/Private baseball roundup: Spitzbarth strikes out 15 for Moore

Shea Spitzbarth wasn’t supposed to be Moore Catholic’s ace this season. It seems like he’s become accustomed to the role anyway.

The senior righthander gave up three earned runs on five hits and struck out 15 to lead Moore to a 10-4 win over St. Raymond in the Mavericks’ CHSAA Class AA opener Tuesday morning on Staten Island.

Spitzbarth also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Chris Goetz was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Moore (1-0). Josh Vargas was 2-for-3 with a run scored for St. Ray’s (0-2).

Xavier 12, Mount St. Michael 0: J.P. Ramirez was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and Cody Mangano cracked a three-run triple for Xavier (1-1) in a five-inning run-rule victory. Nick DiLeo had a two-RBI triple and blanked Mount (0-2) over three innings, throwing just 30 pitches. He’ll come back and start Friday against Archbishop Stepinac. Frank Arigo worked the final two scoreless innings.
