Originally published in 1863 under the title “The Child’s Scripture History, Forming a Complete and Perfect Analysis of the Holy Scripture in Question and Answer,” this classic volume, which can be appreciated by both children and adults, includes 2,157 short questions and answers about the Old Testament and New Testament.

From the anonymous author’s Preface:
Many of the facts, and much of the valuable teaching of the Scriptures, is lost from the want of some systematic arrangement whereby the great events and eternal truths of the Bible may be indelibly fixed on the mind. Learned and able commentaries have been written by our best [theologians] on the Old and New Testaments, which even men of education and piety can study with profit; but for the impressible mind of the child there has been nothing published universally applicable; at least nothing at once simple and concise, and suited to the youthful comprehension. Many manuals and outlines of Scripture history have been published, all excellent in their way; but the great want hitherto has been a work that, without fatiguing the memory, is fitted to teach the great landmarks, scriptural and historical, of Holy Writ. The present work is short and simple. Each question has such direct reference to the text, and its answer so literally the interpretation of the question, that it may be read with entire satisfaction by persons of all religious opinions. It is difficult to compress facts so important as those of biblical history in fewer words or more concise expressions.
